Crabbing in Bullhead Cove

There are two main bodies of water to pass through when going up the Inside Passage from British Columbia to Alaska. The first is Queen Charlotte Strait in BC, and the second is the Dixon Entrance, which divides Canada and the United States. Both are open to the ocean, and therefore are notoriously choppy, often with large swells, confusing seas and strong winds.

Prince Rupert Rowing & Yacht Club

We have been extremely lucky this trip in crossing both. We left Prince Rupert around 11 a.m and at 2:30 crossed from Chatham Sound into Dixon Entrance ... barely a ripple in the water.

About 7 hours and 57 nautical miles after leaving Prince Rupert we dropped anchor in Bullhead Cove, south of Kay Shakes Point in Alaska waters.

Last time we were here, three years ago, we had amazing luck crabbing, pulling up 8 male crabs in one pot. So one of the first things we did after setting anchor was put the tender in the water and set out two crab pots, hoping for another haul.

Beautiful male Dungeness Crab ...a lovely dinner treat.

The next morning, we pulled the pots, and alas ... had just one male crab. But he made for a tasty dinner treat!!!
