Buddying Up With a Black Bear in North Sandy Cove

July 7 – Adams Inlet to North Sandy Cove

We had somewhat of a gloomy gray day on our short 2-hour cruise from Adams Inlet to North Sandy Cove, but decided after anchoring to put the tender in the water and explore the shoreline since it was still early in the day.

Turns out it was a wildlife bonanza!

Our first encounter was with a flock of Surf Scoters ... unusual looking diving ducks that have a bright orange beak resembling a puffin.

We also cruised past a few sea otters ... just hanging out as they float around on their backs.

But our photography coup came when we caught sight of a big black bear feeding along the shoreline.

It was low tide so HE was intent on finding clams and mussels of the rocks along the shore.

WE were intent on getting closer to shore so we could get some good shots ... and probably had the dinghy within 90 feet of him ... which Judy and I considered a little TOO close for comfort.

But to watch him that close up was memorizing, and of course awesome to photograph.

Adding icing to the cake, just before heading back to the boat we came across an eagle flying overhead ... landing in a tree in front of us, seemingly posing for our cameras.

Oh happy days!
